Lion mark

Many product markings around the world function almost identically – they guarantee consumers the high quality of products or compliance with standards. The Lion mark, created by the British Toy & Hobby Association, is a nonmandatory mark in Great Britain. Its goal is to ensure children’s safety during playtime.

What is the British Toy & Hobby Association?

British Toy & Hobby Association is an organization established in 1944 in Great Britain. It aims to ensure the high quality of toys and the materials they’re made of to guarantee that children can play safely.

When entering the British toys market, you should keep the Lion mark in mind as it serves an important purpose – approximately 80% of toy stores, both international giants and local toy shops, are part of BTHA.

In 2024, BTHA celebrates its 80th anniversary with nearly 150 members from Great Britain and companies from other parts of the world who decided to enter the British toy market.

What is the purpose of the Lion mark?

The Lion mark is meant for toys. It proves they’re safe and high quality. Standards are based on EN 71 that concern:

  • flammability
  • trampolines
  • age warning symbols
  • properties.

The Lion mark is similar to the CE mark in the European Union.

  • become a BTHA member
  • sign a declaration to responsibly promote their toys and ensure a safe and ethical production process
  • sign a license agreement
  • adhere to BTHA’s Code of Practice.

Is the Lion mark worth it?

Obtaining the Lion mark for products is undoubtedly a good way to help our business develop and attract potential customers. While the mark isn’t necessary by regulatory bodies, affixing it on the relevant products is recommended.
